Your Hair Needs To Know This About Shampoo

HAVING GREAT HAIR GOES BEYOND A GREAT HAIR CUT & COLOR

Taking good care of your hair is essential. We invest valuable time & money in a beautiful cut & color, we should also invest in premium shampoo with the highest quality ingredients. The truth is that these brands rarely cost more than pennies per use, and the benefits are many.

High end brands have greater quantities of beneficial higher quality ingredients, that are natural and organic, leading to increased benefits and increased prices. The premium products are usually more highly concentrated have higher levels of natural and botanical ingredients and contain less water than less expensive brands, which means you need less of the product to achieve the results you are seeking.

Less expensive shampoos often contain unnecessary chemical filler preservatives and ingredients whose sole purpose is to enhance the shelf life of the product, rather than benefiting your hair. These added chemicals and preservatives can lead to product buildup and hair damage over time.

WHY YOU NEED SEPERATE SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

  • Shampoos are used to clean the hair strands and scalp. Conditioners are used to make the hair strands softer and more manageable.

  • Shampoos contain components that are found in soaps, and are slightly acidic. Conditioners contain moisturizers and glossers, and are more acidic than shampoos.

  • All shampoos are rinsed after being applied. Conditioners are manufactured to be rinsed or left on.

WHAT IS SHAMPOO

  • SURFACTANTS are designed to clean the hair. Here it is important to achieve a balance between mildness and cleaning. It is unusual for a shampoo to contain just one surfactant. Some are designed to improve cleaning while others improve lather and rinsing performance.

  • CONDITIONING AGENTS that have to be deposited onto the hair during the shampooing process while cleaning the hair. Also, they must be deposited at a level that leaves the hair manageable and feeling clean.

  • PRESERVATIVES to prevent microbial growth.

  •  AESTHETICS such as color and pearlising agents to improve the shampoos appearance, and perfumes that go beyond just “nice smells”. They create a holistic in-use experience to make the shampooing process pleasant and desirable.

  • MISCELANEOUS additional ingredients for hair protection and strength. For example the addition of sunscreens to the product, or supplements such as proteins and vitamins.

PARABENS  &  SULFATES

  • PARABENS are the most widely used preservatives against microorganisms in personal care products, such as shampoos, moisturizers, & shave gels.  They can be absorbed through the skin, blood, & digestive system. There are conflicting studies regarding the safety of parabens and their link to cancer.  As a precautionary route it might be wise to use Paraben free products such as Aveda.
  • SULFATES are foaming agents that are used in shampoos, soaps and detergents. They can irritate your skin and scalp, damage your hair follicles, strip your hair of beneficial natural oils, and strip color from your hair.  Sulfate free shampoo is a lot gentler on your hair, but you may notice that there is less lather & foam.
